The Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbean, is a popular destination for tourists, known for its beautiful beaches, resorts, and vibrant culture. However, the country faces some security challenges, including petty crime, violent crime, and occasional civil unrest. It’s essential to remain cautious, particularly in urban centers or outside tourist zones. There is also an increased risk of petty crime in beach areas, as many travelers leave belongings unattended on the shore. Thieves on motorcycles are known to conduct snatch and grabs involving pedestrians walking on the street, or stationary vehicles when held at traffic lights or road junctions.

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and a vibrant, bustling city that attracts both tourists and business travelers. Known for its historical landmarks, rich culture, and growing economy, Santo Domingo is a hub for commerce and tourism in the Caribbean. However, like many large cities, Santo Domingo has challenges related to a high crime rate, traffic safety, and occasional civil unrest. 

While the Dominican Republic does not face the same level of cartel-related violence as Mexico, it is a key transit point for drug trafficking between South America and the United States. Organized crime exists in the country, but it typically does not target tourists. However, criminal organizations can influence certain areas, and visitors should avoid discussing sensitive topics related to drugs or politics. It’s advisable to stay informed about specific neighborhoods, particularly in Santo Domingo.

Petty crime in Santo Domingo, including pickpocketing, bag snatching, and theft, is common in crowded areas such as the Zona Colonial, Malecón, public markets, and bus stations. Tourists and expatriates may be targeted in these areas. Visitors should keep valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items like jewelry or smartphones, and remain cautious in crowded places.

Violent crime in Santo Domingo, is common.  Criminals are not afraid to use violence, and in the past have conducted armed muggings at gunpoint.  Assault and sexual aggression against travelers, including at beach resorts, has been reported in recent years.  In some cases, hotel employees or fellow guests have been implicated.

Driving in the Dominican Republic is a moderate risk.  Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) are frequent and a result of poor road discipline, a lack of enforced traffic laws, driving while under the influence and inadequately maintained vehicles.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that over half of RTCs deaths in the Dominican Republic were those on motorcycles or scooters. Public transportation, including buses and moto-taxis, is widely used but can be unsafe due to poor regulation and the risk of petty crime. It is recommended that tourists avoid using public transportation, especially at night, and rely on secure transport options
