As one of the highest capital cities in the world, nestled in the Andes, Quito attracts tourists and expatriates alike. Despite its charm, Quito faces security challenges, including petty crime, occasional violent crime, and civil unrest. The city also experiences natural hazards such as earthquakes and landslides.

Petty crime is prevalent with muggings, robbery of personal effects, and pickpocketing frequently reported, particularly in crowded areas like La Mariscal, Centro Histórico, public transportation hubs, and markets. Tourists are frequently targeted, so travelers should remain vigilant, keep their valuables secure, and avoid displaying expensive electronics or jewelry in public.. Methods of distraction are typically used by thieves such as asking for directions or staging a fight before committing the crime.  Criminal gangs are not afraid to use armed violence.

 Traffic congestion is a significant issue in Quito, particularly during rush hours. Road conditions in the city are generally good, but aggressive driving and limited traffic control can lead to accidents. Ecuador has one of the highest death rates from road traffic accidents (RTCs) in Latin America (LATAM). Public buses and the trolleybus system in Quito are widely used, but petty crime, including pickpocketing, is common on these forms of transport.
