While the city does not face the same extreme levels of cartel-related violence as Guayaquil, security risks remain significant and varied.

Petty crime is the most common concern in Quito, particularly in busy areas such as the historic Old Town, public transportation hubs, and popular tourist districts. Pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and thefts of personal belongings are frequently reported, often involving distraction techniques. Opportunistic crime increases after dark, and certain neighborhoods are best avoided outside daylight hours.

Ecuador has one of the highest death rates from road traffic accidents (RTCs) in Latin America (LATAM). Public buses and the trolleybus system in Quito are widely used, but petty crime, including pickpocketing, is common on these forms of transport.
