The primary concern for visitors to The Bahamas is crime, particularly in urban areas like Nassau, the capital.  Common crimes include pickpocketing, armed robbery, and sexual assault. These incidents are more likely to occur in Nassau and Freeport, especially in areas away from tourist resorts​.

Criminal activity in Nassau is high and includes both violent and non-violent crime. This risk increases in central city locations, but is present throughout the Bahamas. Tourists should be particularly cautious in Nassau’s "Over the Hill" area, which has a higher crime rate, and in isolated areas, particularly at night. Most resorts and tourist areas are heavily policed and generally safe, but visitors should still remain vigilant, especially when venturing off-resort, as armed violence does exist and the threat to foreign travellers has been increasing in recent years. Criminals are known to follow their victims and will likely use violence if they attempt to resist.

The standard of driving in the Bahamas is below the level recognized by the U.S. Local drivers can travel at excessive speeds where road conditions are unsafe.  Unpredictable and erratic driving is common and drink driving remains a concern, although this is illegal.  There is a high risk of road traffic collisions (RTCs) due to the poor driving standards and road conditions.
