Kenya is a prominent East African country with significant cultural diversity, natural beauty, and a growing economy driven by tourism, agriculture, and technology. While it is a major tourist destination, particularly for safaris and beach holidays along the Indian Ocean, Kenya faces a range of security challenges. These include terrorism, crime, political unrest, and the risks associated with natural disasters. Understanding these risks is crucial for both tourists and expatriates living in Kenya.

Kenya is considered a volatile country with a heightened risk of Terrorism.  Terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab have been responsible for numerous attacks in Kenya, particularly in areas close to the border with Somalia, and targeting high-profile locations in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa. The group seeks to retaliate against Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia. Below are some of the most recent terror attacks occurring in or near Nairobi.

• Westgate Mall Attack (2013): One of the deadliest attacks in Kenya, Al-Shabaab militants targeted Nairobi’s Westgate Mall, killing 67 people, including foreign nationals.
• Garissa University Attack (2015): Another Al-Shabaab attack, in which militants targeted Garissa University, killing 148 people, most of them students.
• DusitD2 Complex Attack (2019): Militants stormed the luxury DusitD2 hotel and office complex in Nairobi, killing 21 people. This attack targeted both locals and foreigners.

Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is a bustling city known for its economic importance, vibrant culture, and proximity to natural reserves such as the Nairobi National Park. However, the city faces significant security challenges, including crime, terrorism, political unrest, and health risks. While Nairobi remains a major hub for international business, NGOs, and tourism, visitors and residents must be aware of the various threats that exist and take necessary precautions.

Crime is one of the primary security concerns in Nairobi, with incidents ranging from petty theft to violent crime. While much of this crime is opportunistic, it can be targeted against foreigners, particularly in areas where tourists and expatriates frequent. Pickpocketing, bag snatching, and theft from vehicles are common, particularly in crowded areas like markets, bus stations, and tourist attractions. Westlands, Karen, and the Central Business District (CBD) are known for street crime, especially at night. Visitors should avoid walking alone, particularly after dark, and be cautious with their belongings.

Armed robberies, carjackings, and home invasions are more serious concerns. Criminals in Nairobi may use force or weapons, particularly in areas with poor police presence. Carjackings, where criminals force drivers out of their vehicles or rob passengers, are a known risk, particularly in the suburbs and late at night. It is advisable to use trusted transportation services, avoid displaying wealth, and lock car doors when driving.

Nairobi is often the epicenter of political unrest, particularly during election periods or in response to social or economic issues. Political protests and strikes can lead to road closures, disruptions to transportation, and sometimes clashes with police. Political and labor-related protests are common in Nairobi, particularly in the CBD and near government buildings. Protests can escalate quickly into violent confrontations between demonstrators and security forces, particularly if riot control methods such as tear gas or water cannons are deployed. It is advisable to avoid areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place and to monitor local news for updates on potential unrest.

Corruption is prevalent in Kenya, including in Nairobi, and affects many sectors, from law enforcement to business operations. Bribery and extortion by public officials, particularly police officers, are common, especially during traffic stops or when dealing with bureaucratic processes. It is best to remain calm, ask for identification, and avoid offering bribes unless necessary to resolve the situation. Report incidents of corruption to your embassy or consulate if possible.

Travel by road in Kenya is high risk. Nairobi’s traffic congestion is notorious, and road safety is a major concern for residents and visitors alike. Public transportation can be unsafe, and road conditions in some areas are poor. Traffic accidents are common in Nairobi due to poor road conditions, aggressive driving, and inadequate traffic enforcement. Pedestrian safety is also a concern, as traffic rules are often not observed. Travelers should avoid driving themselves and instead rely on experienced local drivers or use ride-hailing services like Uber, Bolt, or Little Cab.

Carjackings, particularly at night or in isolated areas, are a serious concern in Nairobi. If driving, always lock your car doors, avoid isolated routes, and be cautious at traffic lights and stop signs. If confronted by carjackers, it is advisable to comply with their demands rather than resist.

Public buses and matatus (shared minibuses) are widely used but are often poorly maintained, overcrowded, and prone to accidents. Matatus are also associated with petty crime and harassment. Travelers should avoid using matatus and instead opt for private taxis or ride-hailing services.

Road conditions are poor in most outlying or rural areas, especially after the rainy seasons when roads deteriorate rapidly, causing extensive potholes and other road hazards. Strongly consider using four-wheel-drive vehicles, especially for travel outside major cities.
