ETS Security Overview - Kenya

Kenya is a prominent East African country with significant cultural diversity, natural beauty, and a growing economy driven by tourism, agriculture, and technology. While it is a major tourist destination, particularly for safaris and beach holidays along the Indian Ocean, Kenya faces a range of security challenges. These include terrorism, crime, political unrest, and the risks associated with natural disasters. Understanding these risks is crucial for both tourists and expatriates living in Kenya.

Kenya is considered a volatile country with a heightened risk of Terrorism.  Terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab have been responsible for numerous attacks in Kenya, particularly in areas close to the border with Somalia, and targeting high-profile locations in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa. The group seeks to retaliate against Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia.

Mombasa, Kenya's second-largest city and a major port on the Indian Ocean, is a significant economic and tourist hub. Known for its beaches, historical landmarks like Fort Jesus, and vibrant culture, Mombasa attracts both domestic and international tourists. However, like other parts of Kenya, Mombasa faces various security challenges, including terrorism, crime, and civil unrest. While many tourists visit Mombasa without incident, travelers should remain vigilant and aware of potential risks.

Pickpocketing, bag snatching, and theft from vehicles are the most common crimes in Mombasa, particularly in crowded areas such as Old TownMombasa Island, and along the beaches. Tourists are often targeted, especially in busy markets, transportation hubs, and tourist attractions. Visitors should be cautious about displaying valuables in public and secure their belongings at all times. While less common than petty crime, violent crime such as muggings, carjackings, and robberies does occur, particularly in more isolated areas or late at night. There have also been reports of violent incidents at ATMs. Travelers should avoid walking alone at night and use trusted transportation services.

Mombasa is prone to certain natural hazards, including flooding, and is affected by the seasonal monsoon rains. Heavy rains, particularly during the long rainy season (March to May), can cause localized flooding in Mombasa, especially in low-lying areas. Flooding can disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure, and increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

Travel by road in Kenya is high risk. Local driving standards are low, road traffic laws are poorly enforced, and local drivers routinely ignore traffic laws and the limited number of functioning traffic lights. There is an increased risk of a road traffic crash or incident due to the poor infrastructure, poor road and vehicle conditions. The roads in most major cities show signs of wear, including potholes and other obstructions. Many vehicles do not meet minimal safety standards and are in poor mechanical condition with worn tires, broken and/or missing taillights, brake lights, and headlights.

Road conditions are poor in most outlying or rural areas, especially after the rainy seasons when roads deteriorate rapidly, causing extensive potholes and other road hazards. Strongly consider using four-wheel-drive vehicles, especially for travel outside major cities.
