ETS Security Overview - Nicaragua

Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America, is known for its natural beauty, including volcanoes, lakes, and beaches, as well as its rich cultural history. The country is bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural history. Despite these attractions, the country presents significant security risks related to crime, political instability, natural disasters, and health concerns.

Masaya, a city located in the western part of Nicaragua, is known for its cultural heritage, bustling markets, and the nearby Masaya Volcano National Park. While Masaya is generally lower risk than larger cities like Managua, it still presents certain security risks, particularly related to crime, political unrest, and natural disasters.

Crime remains a concern for foreign travelers. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and theft, is common in tourist areas, markets, and crowded places in Masaya. Visitors should remain vigilant, especially in public areas like the Mercado de Artesanías (Artisan Market) and at the entrance to the Masaya Volcano National Park. Travelers should avoid displaying valuables, keep personal belongings secure, and be cautious in busy areas. Violent crime, including armed robbery and assault, is less frequent in Masaya than in Managua, but it can still occur, particularly at night or in poorly lit areas. Tourists are generally not targeted, but they should take precautions by avoiding walking alone at night and using trusted transportation options.

Masaya has been a focal point of political protests in recent years, especially during the anti-government demonstrations that began in 2018. These protests, which initially focused on social security reforms, escalated into wider unrest against the government of President Daniel Ortega. Masaya has historically been a stronghold of resistance, and protests in the city have sometimes turned violent, with clashes between protesters and government forces.

Healthcare facilities in Masaya are limited compared to larger cities like Managua. Travelers may need to seek medical attention in Managua, where private clinics and hospitals provide better care. Travelers should ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation. It is advisable to bring any necessary prescription medications, as they may not be readily available locally.

Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) are frequent in Nicaragua, the standard of driving and poor infrastructure exacerbate the problem. Road conditions in Masaya are generally better than in more remote parts of Nicaragua, but they can still be challenging in rural areas. Potholes, poorly maintained roads, and a lack of street lighting make driving at night risky. Public buses in Masaya, like elsewhere in Nicaragua, can be overcrowded and may not meet international safety standards. Petty theft is also a risk on public transportation. It is recommended to use registered taxis or ride-hailing services where available, and to avoid public transportation at night.

Caution should also be given regarding natural disaster – Masaya is located near the Masaya Volcano, an active volcano that attracts many tourists. While the volcano is a major attraction, it also poses risks, including the possibility of eruptions, ashfall, or toxic gas emissions. Visitors to Masaya Volcano National Park should follow all safety guidelines provided by park officials, stay within designated areas, and monitor any warnings from local authorities.

Masaya is also located in a seismically active region and is vulnerable to earthquakes. Travelers should familiarize themselves with local emergency procedures and be aware of evacuation routes, especially when staying in multi-story buildings.
