ETS Security Overview - Lahore
Pakistan, a South Asian country bordered by India, Afghanistan, and Iran, faces a variety of security challenges stemming from internal political instability, terrorism, sectarian violence, and crime. While improvements in security have been made in recent years, the situation remains complex and varies significantly depending on the region. Major cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi each present different levels of risk, with the border regions, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), being more volatile.
Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, is the country’s second-largest city and a key cultural and economic hub. While Lahore is generally lower risk compared to other parts of Pakistan, particularly the more volatile regions in the northwest, the city still faces challenges related to terrorism, crime, civil unrest, and infrastructure-related risks.
The threat of terrorism remains a concern in Lahore, though the overall number of terrorist incidents has decreased in recent years due to successful counter-terrorism efforts by Pakistan’s security forces. However, extremist groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other Islamist factions, have historically targeted Lahore with attacks aimed at government institutions, religious minorities, public spaces, and military installations.
Notable incidents include : In 2017, a suicide bombing at Lahore’s Mall Road killed over a dozen people, including police officers, during a protest.
Another significant attack occurred in 2016, when a bombing in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park during Easter celebrations killed over 70 people, primarily women and children.
While violent crime rates are lower, Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, snatching, and robberies, particularly in crowded markets, public transport hubs, and tourist sites are prevalent throughout the city. In recent years, there have been reports of armed robberies and carjackings, especially in more isolated areas at night.
Lahore has historically been a center for political activism and protests. Demonstrations can occur over political, religious, or economic issues, particularly in areas like Mall Road, where government offices and key political institutions are located. While most protests are peaceful, they can occasionally turn violent, with clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
Traffic in Lahore is notorious for being congested, especially during peak hours, and road safety can be a concern. Traffic accidents are common due to reckless driving, lack of adherence to traffic rules, and poorly maintained roads in some areas.
Public transportation, such as buses and local minibuses, can be overcrowded and are not recommended for foreign visitors due to safety and security concerns. More secure forms of transportation are recommended.
