Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, is one of the world’s most prominent financial and business hubs. It has historically been regarded as a low risk city for travelers and expatriates, known for its low crime rate and high-quality infrastructure. However, since 2019, the city has experienced political upheaval, social unrest, and rising tensions between pro-democracy activists and the Chinese government.

Since 2019, Hong Kong has experienced large-scale pro-democracy protests, sparked by concerns over increased control by the Chinese central government. These protests have sometimes resulted in violent clashes between demonstrators and police, with tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons used to disperse crowds. Areas such as Admiralty, Central, and Mong Kok have been hotspots for protests.

While the frequency of protests has decreased due to the implementation of the National Security Law in 2020, tensions remain high. Travelers should avoid any protests or demonstrations, as they can escalate quickly. Bystanders may also face arrest or violence from law enforcement, even if they are not participating in the protests. Security forces can be heavy handed when dealing with protests, including the deployment of riot police and the use of tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and on some occasion’s live rounds. 

Hong Kong is considered to have a low level of street crime; however, petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and credit card fraud do occur, especially in crowded tourist areas like Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, and Causeway Bay. Travelers should remain vigilant, particularly in busy shopping districts, public transport, and markets. Local parks are vulnerable to opportunistic crime which has led to an increase in police patrols to mitigate the issue.  

Natural Disaster: Hong Kong is prone to typhoons, particularly between June and October. The Hong Kong Observatory provides timely warnings and updates, and the city is well-prepared for such events. Travelers should monitor weather reports during typhoon season and follow any safety advice or evacuation orders issued by local authorities.
