ETS Security Overview - Guyana

Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America, is a growing economy with significant natural resources, including recent oil discoveries. While it has a relatively stable political climate, the country faces challenges related to crime, infrastructure limitations, and natural disasters. 

The crime rate in Guyana is high, particularly in urban areas like Georgetown. While violent crime rates have fluctuated, there are ongoing issues with armed robberies, burglaries, and assaults. The rise in crime is attributed in part to economic disparity and underdeveloped policing infrastructure. Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing and snatch-and-grab thefts, are common in crowded public areas and markets. Crime is specifically prevalent in the areas of Georgetown such as Albouystown and Tiger Bay, Sophia, and all of south Georgetown. A further concern is that a considerable proportion of violent crime has been linked to the drug trade in Guyana. The geographic location lends itself as a key transit point for Colombian cocaine destined for Europe, the Caribbean, and North America

Road travel is considered to be a high risk, especially at night due to highway robbery perpetrated by gangs. It is recommended that you book your ground transportation before you arrive in Guyana to ensure you are safely collected and delivered to your destination. Road conditions are poor and the general driving standard is also poor which unfortunately leads to frequent accidents.

Guyana is subject to natural disasters and is specifically at risk from flooding and landslides caused by tropical storms, especially during the rainy season. This can cause widespread disruption and damage and frequently blocks roads, damages buildings, and affects the general infrastructure.

Healthcare is inadequate throughout the country, including in the capital, Georgetown.
