ETS Security Overview - Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is a popular destination known for its stunning beaches, historical sites, and diverse wildlife. However, the country has experienced political instability, security concerns, and economic challenges in recent years. The country has experienced significant political instability in recent years, including large-scale protests against the government due to economic crises and mismanagement. Political tensions have occasionally escalated into protests or riots, particularly in Colombo and other urban centers.

Colombo, the capital and largest city of Sri Lanka, serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural hub. It is a vibrant city known for its historic sites, busy ports, and growing tourism and business sectors. Travelers to Colombo should be mindful of risks related to crime, political instability, health concerns, and infrastructure challenges.

Sri Lanka has a reasonable risk of low-level crime and foreign travelers can become vulnerable. Petty crime, including pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and theft, is the most common threat to tourists in Colombo. These incidents are more likely to occur in crowded areas such as markets, bus terminals, and tourist attractions. Visitors should take precautions such as securing their valuables, avoiding isolated areas, and staying alert in crowded places, particularly at night.

Violent crime, although not commonplace, can occur in the form of muggings or assaults, particularly in isolated areas or during late hours. Tourists, especially those walking alone, should be cautious after dark and avoid unfamiliar areas. Scams targeting tourists, such as overcharging by tuk-tuk drivers, counterfeit currency, or fraudulent tour operators, are fairly common. Travelers should negotiate fares in advance, use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and only book tours with reputable operators. Foreigners should also be cautious of unofficial police officers or locals offering unsolicited assistance, as these may be scams.

Colombo was the target of a major terrorist attack in 2019, when a series of bombings occurred on Easter Sunday, targeting churches and luxury hotels. While no similar attacks have occurred since then, the potential threat of terrorism remains, particularly from extremist groups. Security measures have been tightened, and there is a visible police and military presence in key areas. The attacks appeared to be well-planned with the intent to cause maximum damage within the Christian and tourism community.  Most visits to the region have been unaffected by terrorism, however foreign visitors should remain cautious to the risk.

Colombo has been the epicenter of political protests, particularly during periods of economic or political crises. Large-scale demonstrations, such as those witnessed in 2022 during the country's economic collapse, can disrupt daily life and sometimes turn violent. While protests are often peaceful, clashes with security forces have occurred. Travelers should avoid political gatherings or demonstrations, as these can escalate unpredictably.

Driving in Sri Lanka can be challenging if unfamiliar with the environment and local driving style. Road conditions in Colombo are generally good, but traffic congestion and reckless driving are common problems. Pedestrians should be cautious when crossing streets, as drivers may not always follow traffic rules or signals. Accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians are common, especially in busy areas. Travelers should avoid driving themselves unless familiar with local traffic conditions and should consider hiring a local driver.

Public transportation in Colombo, including buses and trains, can be overcrowded and uncomfortable, especially during peak hours. Petty theft is common on public transport, so travelers should be cautious and keep their belongings safe. More secure forms of transport are recommended, such as private taxis or hotel-arranged transportation
