While many parts of the country are popular tourist destinations and business hubs, there are also areas where crime, civil unrest, and other threats may impact both local residents and foreign visitors. Cape Town is one of South Africa's most iconic cities, known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. However, like other major cities in South Africa, Cape Town faces significant security challenges that travelers and businesses must navigate. Crime, civil unrest, and occasional natural hazards are among the primary concerns. 

Crime is the primary threat across much of South Africa, particularly in major urban centers like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Violent crimes such as carjackings, home invasions, armed robberies, and muggings occur frequently, especially in townships and informal settlements, but can also affect wealthier areas. Petty crimes like pickpocketing and theft are common in tourist-heavy areas. The Central Business Districts (CBDs) of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban see heightened levels of crime.

Cape Town’s peripheral areas, though less affected, have seen an increase in gang-related violence, which can spill over into tourist zones. The Central Business District (CBD), and certain areas in the southern suburbs (such as Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha) are known for higher crime rates. Even tourist-friendly areas like Green Point, Sea Point, and Camps Bay have seen occasional violent incidents.

The city is notorious for its gang violence, particularly in the Cape Flats, where rival gangs are involved in ongoing turf wars. While these areas are generally far from the central tourist districts, there have been instances where gang-related violence has affected broader regions of the city. Gang activity is concentrated in neighborhoods such as Manenberg, Hanover Park, and parts of Mitchells Plain.

While Cape Town's roads are generally in good condition, the city faces significant challenges related to traffic accidents, drunk driving, and smash-and-grab thefts. These issues are particularly prevalent in urban areas and can affect both locals and foreign visitors. Major highways such as the N1, N2, and M3, particularly around the CBD, are known hotspots for vehicle-related crimes, especially in slow traffic or at night. Rural roads may pose additional hazards, with less reliable road infrastructure and poorer lighting. Avoid traveling alone, especially during the evenings.
