In 2015 ETS were providing Executive Protection and special event security to over 40 VIPs when an 8.3 (Richter) earthquake shook Santiago and required extensive crisis risk management and security reaction. Chile, a South American country known for its stability, economic development, and natural beauty, generally offers a lower risk environment compared to many of its regional neighbors. With a diverse landscape that includes deserts, glaciers, mountains, and coastline, Chile attracts millions of tourists each year. However, the country is not without risks. While crime rates are lower than in other Latin American countries, issues such as petty crime, civil unrest, and natural hazards like earthquakes remain concerns.

Political instability has also been a growing issue in recent years, with large-scale protests since 2019. The protests were initially sparked by social inequality and economic grievances but have evolved into broader demonstrations against government policies and the drafting of a new constitution. Areas near government buildings or in Plaza Italia (also known as Plaza Baquedano) in Santiago are frequent sites of demonstrations. While many protests are peaceful, some demonstrations have escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement, involving tear gas, water cannons, and road blockages. Foreign nationals are advised to avoid protest areas, as violence can erupt unexpectedly.

Chile, including Santiago, is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, sitting on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Earthquakes of varying magnitudes are frequent, and the country has experienced major earthquakes in the past. Chilean infrastructure is well-prepared for seismic activity, but travelers should familiarize themselves with safety protocols and emergency procedures in the event of an earthquake. Also, Due to its location along the Pacific coast, Chile is vulnerable to tsunamis, particularly following large offshore earthquakes. Coastal areas have designated tsunami evacuation routes, and travelers should be aware of these when visiting coastal regions.
