Mexico is a diverse country with rich cultural, historical, and natural attractions, making it one of the top global tourist destinations. While many regions of Mexico are safe for travelers, the country faces significant security challenges, particularly in areas affected by organized crime and drug cartel activity. Violence related to cartel conflicts, as well as crime, can impact both residents and visitors. However, the risks vary greatly depending on the region. Puerto Vallarta, a major tourist destination on Mexico's Pacific coast, is known for its beaches, resorts, and vibrant cultural scene. While generally considered lower risk than many other Mexican cities, Puerto Vallarta does present certain issues, including petty crime, natural disasters, and potential cartel activity in surrounding areas. 

While Puerto Vallarta itself has been relatively insulated from Mexico’s broader cartel violence, organized crime does exist in the region. The neighboring state of Jalisco is home to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful and dangerous cartels in Mexico. Although cartel-related violence in Puerto Vallarta is rare and tends to be targeted, travelers should remain aware of the broader security situation and avoid areas where cartel activity is known to occur, particularly rural or isolated areas.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and theft, is the most common threat to tourists in Puerto Vallarta. Popular tourist areas like the Malecón, Zona Romántica, and beaches are hotspots for petty theft. Travelers should be cautious in crowded areas, avoid displaying valuables, and keep personal belongings secure at all times. Incidents of robbery, assault, and carjackings have occurred, particularly in areas outside the main tourist zones and at night. Travelers should exercise caution when walking in unfamiliar areas after dark, and it is advisable to use secure transportation options such as trusted taxis or ride-hailing services like Uber.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya are present in the region. Travelers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and sleeping in air-conditioned rooms or using mosquito nets. Pregnant women should be particularly cautious about the risk of Zika virus.

Roads in Puerto Vallarta are generally well-maintained, particularly in tourist areas, but traffic congestion can be an issue during peak times. In more rural areas or less developed neighborhoods, road conditions may be poorer, with potholes or limited signage. Travelers should avoid driving at night in unfamiliar areas and stick to main roads and highways when possible.

Public transportation, such as buses, is widely used by locals and can be a cost-effective way to get around. However, buses may not meet Western safety standards and are often crowded. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber are more reliable and safer options for tourists.
