ETS Security Overview - Panama

Panama, located at the crossroads of North and South America, is known for its strategic importance due to the Panama Canal, which is vital for global trade. It is also an increasingly popular destination for tourists and expatriates due to its political stability, thriving economy, and relatively low risk environment. However, like any country, Panama faces a range of security challenges, including crime, natural disasters, and potential political unrest. Understanding these risks is crucial for travelers, expatriates, and businesses operating in the country.

Panama’s location as a key transit point between South America and the United States makes it a strategic corridor for drug trafficking. While the Panamanian government works closely with U.S. and international agencies to combat drug trafficking, criminal organizations, particularly in Colón, Darién, and the Colombian border, pose a threat. Drug-related violence is generally confined to specific areas and rarely targets tourists or expatriates. However, foreigners should avoid engaging in any form of drug-related activities as Panama has strict penalties for drug offenses, including long prison sentences.

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is a bustling metropolis and a significant hub for business, trade, and tourism. Its strategic location near the Panama Canal makes it a focal point for international commerce. While Panama City is relatively safe compared to many other Latin American capitals, it does face certain security risks, including petty crime, organized crime, natural disasters, and occasional political unrest.

Petty crime, including pickpocketing, bag snatching, and theft from vehicles, is the most common security threat in Panama City. Tourists and expatriates are often targeted, especially in crowded areas, tourist hotspots, and public transport hubs. Areas like Casco ViejoVia EspañaCinta Costera, and El Chorillo have higher incidences of petty crime. Visitors should exercise caution, especially in crowded areas and at night. Violent crime, including armed robbery, muggings, and assaults, is less common but can occur, particularly in certain areas. The risk increases at night and in more isolated parts of the city. Popular tourist areas like Casco Viejo are generally well-policed but should still be approached with caution.

Panama City experiences heavy rainfall, particularly during the rainy season from May to November, which can lead to flooding and landslides. Poor drainage systems in some areas of the city, especially low-lying regions, exacerbate the risk of flooding. Flooding can disrupt transportation and damage property in affected areas.

Road traffic accidents are a common hazard in Panama City due to reckless drivingpoorly enforced traffic laws, and heavy traffic congestion. Traffic can be chaotic, and pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing roads, as drivers may not always yield.

Public buses, known as Diablos Rojos, are common in Panama City but can be unsafe due to poor vehicle maintenance, overcrowding, and reckless driving. Unlicensed taxis can pose a security risk, with the possibility of overcharging or, in rare cases, more serious crimes such as robbery. It's recommended to use Uber or licensed transport services to ensure safer transportation.
