ETS Security Overview - Nicaragua

Nicaragua, located in Central America, is known for its rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant history. However, the country has faced increasing political instability, civil unrest, and economic challenges in recent years. While crime levels are generally lower compared to other Central American countries, Nicaragua still poses risks for travelers and businesses, particularly related to civil unrest, crime, and natural disasters.

Since 2018, Nicaragua has experienced significant political unrest, largely in response to government actions under President Daniel Ortega. Protests and demonstrations have often been met with heavy-handed responses from security forces, resulting in violence, arrests, and deaths. These protests, particularly in the capital city of Managua and other major urban centers, can disrupt transportation, business operations, and everyday activities.

Caution should also be given regarding natural disasters –

  • Nicaragua is located in a seismically active zone, making it vulnerable to earthquakes. The country has experienced significant earthquakes in the past, and while major events are infrequent, there is always the possibility of seismic activity. Buildings, particularly in older areas, may not always be up to modern seismic standards.
  • Nicaragua is home to several active volcanoes, including Masaya, Momotombo, and San Cristóbal. Volcanic activity, while generally limited to occasional eruptions or gas emissions, poses risks for nearby communities and visitors. Travelers should stay informed about volcanic activity and follow local advisories.
  • The country is also vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms, particularly along the Caribbean coast during the hurricane season (June to November). Flooding and landslides can occur, especially in rural areas and areas with poor infrastructure. Hurricane Eta and Iota, which hit Nicaragua in 2020, caused significant damage, highlighting the risks from these events.

León, Nicaragua’s second-largest city and a key cultural and intellectual hub, is known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and proximity to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches and volcanoes. While León has a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the capital, Managua, it still faces some security challenges, particularly concerning petty crime, political unrest, and natural disasters.

Petty theft, such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and mobile phone theft, is common in busy areas of León, especially around tourist attractions, markets, and bus stations. Violent crime is relatively low in León compared to other cities in Nicaragua, but there are occasional incidents of muggings, particularly in less populated areas at night. Visitors should take precautions when walking alone after dark, especially in poorly lit areas or on isolated streets. Burglaries targeting homes and vehicles, particularly in tourist or expat areas, have been reported. Expats and visitors should ensure their accommodations have proper security measures, including secure locks and guarded entrances.

Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) are frequent in Nicaragua, often due to reckless driving, poor road maintenance, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws. Travelers should exercise caution, particularly when driving at night. Public buses and taxis are available in León but can be crowded and poorly maintained. Ride-sharing apps are not widely available, so it is recommended to use registered taxis or pre-arranged private transportation, especially for tourists.
