Bolivia, a country known for its diverse culture and stunning landscapes, presents a unique set of security challenges for travelers. While it is generally low risk for tourists, there are specific issues related to crime, political instability, and environmental hazards that should be considered. Petty crime is the most common threat in Bolivia, particularly in urban areas such as La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Cochabamba. Pickpocketing, bag snatching, and theft from vehicles are frequent in crowded places like markets, bus terminals, and tourist attractions like Plaza Murillo and the Witches' Market. The U.S. Department of State advises travellers to exercise increased caution due to crime, particularly at night and in less secure areas​.

Bolivia has a low violent crime level in comparison to other South American countries, however crimes of violence do occur with carjacking and assaults quite common in Santa Cruz and the La Paz metropolitan area. Border areas have the potential for drug-trafficking gangs to be operating in the area, which increases the threat level.  Foreign visitors have become victims of express kidnappings in the past when traveling through these areas where victims are briefly abducted and forced to withdraw money from ATMs. OSAC highlights that these incidents are rare but advises vigilance, especially when using public transportation. Those who appear unfamiliar with their environment and have reduced levels of personal security are more likely to be targeted.

Criminals have been known to impersonate police officers and act in collusion with bogus/fake taxis to target foreigners.

Social conflict is common in Bolivia and blockades may occur along the main roads. Public transport can be disrupted at very short notice and strikes may result in widespread road blockages, including on routes to and from airports.

Travel by road in Bolivia is high risk.  The standard of driving is poor with the majority of drivers uninsured and unqualified.  Road traffic laws are not enforced; drivers lack discipline and awareness.  The roads are inadequately marked and in poor condition, especially in rural areas where visibility is reduced. Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) can occur and are a result of poor road conditions and unsafe driving standards. As a result of this, The FCO (UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) and the U.S. State Department recommend against self-driving in rural areas.
