ETS Security Overview - Argentina

Argentina's political landscape remains complex and dynamic, shaped by economic challenges, social unrest, and upcoming elections. The country is currently under the leadership of President Alberto Fernández, a member of the Peronist coalition, Frente de Todos. The government has been facing significant challenges, including high inflation, rising poverty, and a struggling economy, which have fueled public dissatisfaction and increased numbers of protests.

Buenos Aires being the capital and home for the Argentinian government is often subjected to random protests blocking traffic on major freeways, or areas in the vicinity of Government buildings. While these are usually peaceful, they can disrupt daily activities and sometimes turn violent. It’s advisable to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, as these can escalate unexpectedly.

Crime in Argentina varies significantly depending on the region, with major cities, including Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Rosario experiencing higher crime rates, particularly related to theft and armed robbery, than more rural areas. Tourists should be vigilant about pickpocketing and bag snatching, particularly in crowded places such as bus and train stations, and in popular tourist areas like La Boca and San Telmo, where petty crime is more prevalent.

Driving in Buenos Aires can be challenging due to heavy traffic, aggressive driving behaviors, and sometimes confusing road signs. Many drivers do not strictly follow traffic laws, which increases the risk of accidents. For those unfamiliar with local driving conditions, using public transport or hired drivers is recommended.
