Ethiopia, one of Africa's largest and most populous nations, boasts a rich cultural history and growing strategic importance on the continent. However, the country faces significant security challenges, including political instability, ethnic conflicts, and civil unrest. Ethiopia's internal conflicts, particularly in the northern regions, present potential risks for travelers and businesses. 

The most significant security concern in Ethiopia is the ongoing conflict in the northern Tigray region, which has expanded into parts of Amhara and Afar. While a peace agreement was signed in late 2022, tensions remain high, and the potential for renewed violence persists. Additionally, other regions, such as Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz, experience periodic ethnic and political violence.The conflict has led to widespread displacement, humanitarian crises, and disruptions in communication and transportation networks. Travelers and businesses should avoid affected regions and monitor developments closely.

Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, serves as a diplomatic hub and a gateway for international businesses in Africa. The city faces a range of security challenges, including political tensions, civil unrest, petty crime, and the risk of natural disasters. There is a medium to high risk of terrorism in Ethiopia. Its proximity to conflict zones in neighboring Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea increases the risk of spillover violence. The militant group al-Shabaab, based in Somalia, poses a regional threat, though direct attacks in Ethiopia have been limited. The Ethiopian government continues to maintain a strong military presence in the region to counter potential terrorist threats. Likely targets include crowded spaces, transport hubs and public places frequented by foreign travelers.

 Ethiopia is considered high-risk for crime.  Opportunistic criminals operate throughout the region and will target individuals who lack situational awareness. Petty crimes, including pickpocketing, theft and harassment from youth gangs are common.  Gangs are particularly active in the Addis Ababa region, and crowded areas are vulnerable.  Western travelers, including humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travelers are at increased risk of kidnapping attempts.  The areas considered most dangerous are located on the southern border with Kenya and Ethiopia’s Somalia region.  The kidnap threat is likely to exist throughout the region, remaining vigilant is vital.  

Travel by road in Ethiopia is considered high risk.  The standard of driving in Ethiopia is poor; the majority of drivers are uninsured and unqualified.  Road traffic laws are not enforced; drivers lack discipline and awareness.  The roads are inadequately marked and in poor condition, especially in rural areas where visibility is reduced.  Drivers are known to travel at excessive speeds where road and vehicle conditions are unsafe.  Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) are frequent and are a result of inadequate driver training, poor road conditions and excessive speeding.  World Health Organization (WHO) have advised Ethiopia as having one of the highest death rates in the world as a result of RTCs.
